Nomenclatures in Digital Photo

Photo programs may have some nomenclatures that are carried within certain types of digital files. Some of these are EXIF, IPTC and XMP. EXIF stands for Exchangeable Image Files and is used by camera manufacturers to store camera shooting information with certain type of digital image files. It is not actually a standard but is just in common use by manufacturers. It can store date, time, ISO, aperture, focal length, flash info and other camera-specific details as well as geographic information and sound files.

IPTC which stands for International Press Telecommunications Council is another nomenclature. Whereas EXIF contains the camera data, IPTC contains the labeling data for the photo. It is a defined standard and is widely used as a general method of internally labeling digital photos. XMP is a newer labeling format which maintains all the IPTC fields. The acronym stands for Extensible Metadata Platform.
